Senior Director Silicon Engineering

Ron Ho is Senior Director of Silicon Engineering at Meta, where he supports a broad array of silicon systems work including custom packaging, IO and sensors design, post silicon test, silicon displays, and advanced R&D. His experience prior to joining Meta includes a decade of CPU design at Intel spanning 80486 to Itanium processors; a decade-plus at Sun Labs/Oracle architecting IO, silicon photonics, stacked DRAM architectures, and customized database accelerators; and another several years at Intel (Altera) building FPGAs. At Meta, Ron’s organization is focused on “realizing the impossible” in augmented and virtual reality, and he tries very hard to get into as much technological trouble as his team will allow. Ron received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in Electrical Engineering.

Silicon systems for AR/VR: building bridges to tomorrow’s connected society

Today we live in uncertain and truly interesting times – most of us have just emerged from a 2-year bubble of working and living in Zoom, with travel quarantines only a very recent memory. For many of us, 2020 and 2021 brought home both the fragility and deep importance of personal and social contact. At Meta’s Reality Labs we see our work – building tools for bridging and connecting people – as increasingly fundamental to tomorrow’s realities. But the technical challenges in enabling AR and VR are enormous. Many of them focus on silicon and the silicon ecosystem, and these present exciting opportunities for innovation. In this talk I will introduce some of these ideas in the context of our AR/VR vision.

Meta

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology.
